iPhone 3GS ‘No Service’ on 3G with O2

Monday, September 7th, 2009

O2’s 3G is notoriously sketchy, however, there seems to be some inherent issue with selecting 3G ‘On’ with the iPhone 3GS.

Presently, if I leave 3G set to ‘On’ I get a ‘No Service’ message on screen about 60% of the time. In the same location, if I then flick it to ‘Off’ I get a signal (albeit a GPRS one - as expected). By the way, this is unrelated to the much publicised O2 data outages of late. This is cellular, not data related.

The problem is, when a 3G signal isn’t present the iPhone seems to fail to search for the GPRS network, meaning the iPhone spends more time than needed out of signal.

Anyone else experiencing the same problem? iPhone OS 3.1 is due soon so I’m hoping it solves the issue otherwise I’ll be taking a trip to the Apple store…

Update (11/09/2009)

In frustration, I phoned O2 to ask if I could get my device opened to other SIM cards. I was told that even though it was bought as a PAYG phone, it wasn’t possible. Apple had chosen to only allow the devices to be open to O2 SIM cards. Suspecting it may be a network rather than hardware issue I jailbroke and unlocked (using Redsn0w & Ultrasn0w) and my iPhone 3GS.

And guess what? No problems whatsoever using Orange. I don’t see any ‘No Service’ messages, it switches between 3G and GPRS seamlessly. Basically behaves as you would expect.

Now, that isn’t to say Orange is necessarily better than O2. However, if the areas you frequent have poor O2 service you will more than likely see the ‘No Service’ message more often than not. So, until O2 looses it’s exclusivity, it’s either buy a ludicrously expensive SIM free model or opt to jailbreak - something I’d really rather not do given an alternative choice.

Sending mails with Orange taking forever?

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Orange UK is my Internet Service Provider. In the last few months sending emails has become problematic with SMTP errors and mails taking literally 5+ minutes to leave the outbox. I’d tried changing SMTP servers a few times but with no luck. However, I’ve finally found one that seems to work with no problems. If your having similar issues try changing the SMTP server address in your email program to smtp.orange.co.uk (it’s probably configured at the minute for smtp.orangehome.co.uk or smtp.wanadoo.co.uk etc). Mine are flying out now, even for my non-orange email addresses.

TECH: 96% of an Orange e-mail account is spam…

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

If you have Orange as an ISP you will already know what an absolutely obscene amount of spam you get delivered to your inbox. I’ve moaned about it before here

Well, a report mentioned here reveals that “…of the emails received by consumers who use Orange as their ISP, some 96 percent was spam”

Orange users now have proof, rather than just the suspicion, that standards have slipped horribly at Orange…

TECH: Orange - get some working spam filters

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Orange - for crying out loud get some working spam filters! I have 2 or 3 email accounts I use regularly but my Orange address (actually still a Freeserve one before Wanadoo and then Orange took it over) presents an avalanche of ‘RE: La Pha en Ligne’ emails EVERY SINGLE DAY - I’m talking 400 plus at the minute. I daren’t even look ‘La Pha en Ligne’ up on Google, lest my screen gets infested with stripping Lolitas and malware.
The most frustrating thing is that even having logged into the Orange web mail, selected the offending mails and marked them as spam - it makes absolutely no difference.
